Pianist Helen Sung leads an exciting quintet. The Guardian reports that "her lyricism, light touch, and classical polish" is balanced with "plenty of hard-chord muscle." Originally from Houston, Sung is a graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, a past winner of the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition, and has worked with artists like Ron Carter, Steve Turre, and Wayne Shorter. She didn’t fully discover jazz until college but she quickly found her calling. As Thomas Conrad described it in JazzTimes, "Sung earned a master’s degree in classical music before she found
jazz, which she now plays with extravagant chops and the zeal of a late convert."
